Twice Exceptional Program
A drop-in support group for families with neurodivergent children.
We have a new, drop-in support group for families with neurodivergent children, aged 0 to 6 years old.
The group will run every second Wednesday of each month from 1 pm to 2 pm in the gym here at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre. It is free to attend and will focus on providing families with the skills and information to better understand and support their twice exceptional children. The sessions are drop-in, so there’s no need to register in advance.
We will provide coffee, tea, and a light snack each month.
What is neurodivergence?
Neurodivergence describes a series of conditions resulting from atypical brain development and functioning. People who are neurodivergent observe, process, and interact with the world in unique ways, and this can require additional understanding and support from the people in their lives.
What kind of information will the Twice Exceptional program supply?
This program was developed with assistance from Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Keyworkers from Axis Family Resources, who will be joining the group sessions.
During the group sessions, we will provide:
- Steps for assessment,
- Supportive information,
- Connections to Northern Health Assessment Network (NHAN), and
- Tips for supporting your neurodivergent child in many aspects of daily life.
Who can come to the support group?
The support network around a neurodivergent child can vary in size, and we understand that there may be one or several people who would benefit from the information and resources we can share, so everyone is welcome. That includes your children. We will have bikes and toy cars to ride on in a sectioned-off portion of the gym for them to play with during the program meeting.
Does my child need to have a diagnosis for me to attend?
No, we’ll be discussing steps for having your child assessed for neurodivergence as part of the group sessions, so you’re more than welcome to attend if you have reason to suspect you may need support.
